    Using Forums
In general, forums are best for allowing a group of students to build a sense of community and to discuss and organize a large number of topics that relate to a larger theme, concept, or idea.
    The Tool
Terms and Examples - Every forum will vary in the exact features and presentation. However, most forums will have some variation of the following. Common forum-related terms: forum vs. board; header; flat vs. threaded view; signature; boardwalk; new, views, and replies; threads and topics; sticky topics; BB code; emoticons; avatar; rank; kudos/karma/etc.
    Advantages
Allow for multiple discussions on different topics to occur at the same time (and more easily than blogs)
Focus is on discussion/debate of the topics presented in the board
Multiple "boards" allow for students to address a variety of issues, which can be as broad as a particular course or as specific as observed bird behavior around the school
Multiple "boards" also provide an opportunity to teach audience: certain conventions appropriate for some boards may not be appropriate for others, etc.
General or open-discussion boards allow students to build community and/or discuss issues in which they are interested without "muddying the waters" of the class or topic boards, which helps build a sense of community among students from different courses
All student activity is in one place
    Disadvantages
Posts tend to be shorter (and therefore often "less thoughtful") than blog entries
Multiple boards and multiple threads can be difficult to keep up with (though, using "new post" features or RSS feeds can help)
There is little sense of "personal control" over a discussion forum (as opposed to a student blog that could be customized for each student)
Because forums are more discussion-oriented, the discussions can sometimes run off topic or become heated ... this requires close monitoring
    Ideas for Use
Continuation of class discussion ... where students continue to think through ideas raised in class (this should usually be planned, where topics assigned to the board are complex enough to sustain discussion and analysis from multiple perspectives)
Critique of ideas, literature, film, art, music ... where the board is devoted to a specific topic, genre, etc. and students start and continue threads about specific works or ideas
Theme development ... where the students discuss a course-related theme in terms of specific examples from assigned readings, popular culture, their own experiences, etc.
Writing workshop ... where students post and receive critique on their writings (each thread is a new writing)
Tutoring ... where students post requests for help with a given topic/assignment/subject and receive responses from other students
    Evaluation
Think carefully about why you're using the forum and therefore what kinds of skills you'll be looking at in your evaluation.
If the forum is mainly a place to develop fluency (and is considered open "for the community" only), then your evaluation will be more lenient than if you're expecting more formal/academic responses. Keep in mind that the more informal you keep the forums, the more writing you're likely to get from students.
In general, your evaluation requirements should address these questions:
How often must a student post?
Is there a word length requirement for a post (or for total posts)?
Do new threads and replies have the same value?
What kinds of topics will receive credit?
What kind of language must be used?
Must entries reference/link to other resources?
    Getting Started
If you're going to use a discussion forum, you should already have a clear purpose for the tool in mind. Don't make the mistake of deciding to use the tool first and then trying to figure out how or why ...
Many school districts provide discussion forums through Blackboard or similar services, so check with your school first.
You can also find free discussion forum services online, or use open-source software to host a forum on your own server space. Some service providers and software to consider include:
    SMF - http://www.simplemachines.org [software]
    phpBB - http://www.phpbb.com/ [software]
Best Free Forums - http://www.bestfreeforums.com/ [provider]
phpBB for Free - http://www.phpbbforfree.com/ [provider]
Free Forum World - http://www.freeforumworld.com/ [provider]
    Kazorum - http://www.kazorum.com/ [provider]
    BoardsXP - http://www.boardsxp.com/ [provider]
    Network54 - http://www.network54.com/ [provider]
    ezBoard - http://www.ezboard.com/ [provider]
    Runboard - http://www.runboard.com/ [provider]
    ProBoards - http://www.proboards.com/ [provider]
    Tangler - http://www.tangler.com/ [provider]
If you're going to use third-party providers or software, read the terms and conditions, get a sample account, and play around with the service to see if it will allow you to do the kinds of things you want to do. Pay careful attention to how much control users have over their own content, how private the content is, and whether or not users are protected from other users of the service.
